If your kids are Roald Dahl fans, then this post is for you!
To celebrate Roald Dahl Day we've put together 10 Phizz-Whizzing Roald Dahl inspired goodies that would make perfect gifts for any little 'chiddler' or 'human bean' for Christmas or a birthday!
One of our favourite finds has been the Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary. It's packed not only with words created by Roald Dahl & key words from his books, but also everyday words which have wonderfully creative descriptions & links to various characters or events from Dahl's stories. It would make the perfect gift for any budding Matilda 7yrs+.
Another favourite of ours has been 'Roald Dahl's George's Marvellous Experiments' which is full of fun science experiments you can do at home. From magnetic cars to exploding potions, each experiment is explained in clear detail with simple explanations of the science behind each one. I particularly like the 'What if?' section at the end of each experiment which encourages children to make predictions & consider further experiments.
'Roald Dahl Songs and Verse' is a compilation of rhymes taken from Dahl's many books. Popular children's illustrators such as Lauren Child, Chris Riddell, Axel Scheffler, & Tony Ross have produced captivating images alongside each verse which children will love. This is a perfect book to dip into, & gives a real taste of the breadth of Roald Dahl's magical worlds.
Moving onto other Roald Dahl inspired goodies, this Roald Dahl BrainBox game is something we've enjoyed playing together as a family. Aimed at children 7yrs+ it's perfect for encouraging memory skills, discovering more about the books, & the life of Roald Dahl.
This Roald Dahl Puppet Theatre is on my wishlist! What a fantastic way to retell Dahl's wonderful tales, & create new stories using the characters from his books. With 60 puppets, 6 different backdrops & Quinten Blakes fabulous illustrations, this creative toy is sure to get children's imaginations buzzing!
If you're looking for a stocking filler or small birthday gift then I'm sure this set of Top Trumps would be a big hit with any Roald Dahl superfan. Which character is the kindest, & which is the most cunning? Perfect for long journeys & to take away on holidays.
I'm always on the lookout for fun activities & games that encourage spelling, & this one looks like a lot of fun! The BFG Whopsy Word Game is aimed at 8yrs+ & comes with 100 letter tiles & a BFG Gobblefunk word glossary which children can use to create Dahl inspired words. I also love that it comes in a dreamcatcher-like jar.
How do you measure up to the BFG? Why not find out with this Jump-Squiffling Giant Jigsaw. Once you've completed the gigantic jigsaw (of 150 pieces) you can measure how tall you are next to the BFG. Great for exploring simple maths & measurements. The jigsaw puzzle is aimed at children 6yrs+, but I can see all ages wanting to compare how tall they are alongside the Big Friendly Giant!
If you're looking for more maths games, this Matilda Times Table game may be of interest. The box contains a number of playing cards & 4 different game suggestions, although these can be adapted to suit various age ranges & abilities. A fun way to explore multiplication.
Finally, this set of 10 Audiobooks is a must for all Roald Dahl fans, whatever their age. Each classic story is read by celebrities such as Kate Winslet, Stephen Fry, David Walliams, & Chris O'dowd. I'm sure this would brighten up any long car journeys, there are so many great stories to share.
Whatever you & your childders are doing today, I wish you a Wondercrump & Splendiferous day!
