Autumn is well and truly here & it's the perfect time to highlight one of nature's hero's, the humble hedgehog. Sadly these prickly creatures are under threat. Habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and human activity have added to the decline in this species, with 50% fewer hedgehogs in rural areas since 2000. Hedgehogs are now listed as 'vulnerable' on Britain's Red List for Mammals, but perhaps we can all do something to reverse this statistic.
As Christians, we believe God asks us to be stewards of creation, caring for the natural world with respect and compassion. This trail not only raises awareness of some of the difficulties facing local wildlife, but also encourages both children & adults to actively care for God's creation.
Each of the trail signs features fun hedgehog facts to discover, as well as 'Top Tips' or simple actions that we can all take to help hedgehogs & other wildlife too. There are also simple nature-based activities to explore, links to Bible verses, a mystery word to unscramble, plus a challenge for children & adults at the end of the trail.
There is no specific order the trail signs need to be displayed in, you choose what's best for your setting, but obviously the welcome sign needs to be seen first, and the 'Hedgehog Hero Challenge' last.
